Evolutionarily, why is eating a large meal after a prolonged fast harmful?

For hundreds of thousands of years, we were hunter gathers which means a majority of our calories came from animals. I would assume that it was common to go at least a couple days between each meal as hunting was not always consistent and it was difficult to preserve food. So besides maybe finding some berries or roots or something, we would be mostly fasting while hunting. Then when we did kill an animal, we would likely have a very large meal. Anyone have any input?
